Coastal change

Sea defences

Sea defences are maintained where a favourable benefit-cost ratio can be demonstrated. Elsewhere, the Council supports managed realignment.

Managed realignment

Managed realignment allows the coastline to retreat in a planned way rather than through uncontrolled erosion. Residents of properties affected by managed realignment were, until recently, accommodated under the Council's coastal roll-back scheme, which relocated households to designated hotels along the coast pending permanent rehousing.

The hotels designated under the coastal roll-back scheme are presently contracted for asylum support accommodation under section 98 of the Immigration and Asylum Act 1999.

Residents awaiting rehousing under the coastal roll-back scheme are asked to await further guidance.
